The Osino District Court in the Eastern Region has granted bail to 15 supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) accused of arson at the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Asuboi, Ayensuano Constituency.
The incident, which occurred on December 10, 2024, followed protests by a group calling itself Ayensuano Concerned Youth after Ida Adwoa Asiedu was declared MP-elect for the constituency. During the unrest, the EC office was set on fire.
The suspects, arrested and charged with arson, were each granted bail of GH₵20,000 with one surety. Despite opposition from the prosecution, the court, presided over by His Worship Salifu Bugri Ayagiba, ruled in favor of the defense counsel’s plea, highlighting the suspects’ ties to the community and their commitment to cooperate with legal proceedings.
Prosecuting Detective Chief Inspector Kamal Salifu Gumah had objected to the bail, citing ongoing investigations and the potential for interference. However, the defense argued that the accusations were unproven and assured the court of the suspects’ willingness to adhere to legal requirements.
As part of the bail conditions, the court mandated the accused to report to the Kibi police commander regularly. The case is set to continue on January 14, 2025.
Speaking on the outcome, the defense expressed optimism, stating:
“These are all accusations, and only evidence will prove if they committed the alleged acts. Until then, it remains a mere accusation. If the police gather evidence, we’ll proceed; if not, the case will be dismissed.”
