The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the details of the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), set to commence on July 8, 2024. A total of 569,095 candidates will participate in this year’s examination across Ghana. The council has received GHC 55,873,689.87 from the government to facilitate the smooth conduct of the exams.
Mr. John K Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC National Office, provided these updates during a press conference in Accra aimed at informing stakeholders and the public about the BECE logistics. The examination will span from July 8 to July 15, 2024, beginning with English Language and concluding with Arabic.
It will be administered in 2,123 examination centers nationwide, supervised by 2,123 supervisors, 1,889 assistant supervisors, and 19,973 invigilators to ensure rigorous oversight and adherence to examination standards.

Of the total candidates, 282,648 are male and 286,447 are female, marking a slight decrease of 5.29% compared to last year’s figures. Candidates from public schools will be assessed based on the newly introduced Common Core Curriculum, while private candidates will follow the previous syllabus.
WAEC has distributed essential examination materials such as objective answer cards, answer booklets, and pencils to District Education Offices across the country to facilitate a seamless examination process.
To ensure thorough preparation and compliance with examination regulations, WAEC has conducted sensitization programs and provided comprehensive guidelines to all participating schools and stakeholders. Special provisions have been made for candidates with special educational needs to guarantee inclusivity and equitable participation in the examination.
For private candidates, 1,366 individuals have registered for the BECE, indicating a decrease of 25.7% from the previous year. These candidates will sit for their exams at fifteen designated centers primarily located in regional capitals.
As WAEC finalizes its preparations, the council reaffirms its commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and successful BECE. This examination marks a significant milestone in the academic journey of thousands of Ghanaian students, setting the stage for their future educational endeavors.
