The Ghana Railway Development Authority has refuted claims that it intends to purchase 12 modern diesel-powered trains for the Ghana Railways Company. The Authority clarified that only two trains have been acquired from Poland.
Yaw Owusu, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority, provided clarification, stating that the recently procured passenger coaches are intended for testing on the nearly completed Tema-Mpakadan Railway line.
He mentioned that the railway line is nearing completion, with approximately 98% of the construction finished, and it is set to be commissioned in May.

Mr. Owusu explained that the first train is expected to depart in mid-February and arrive in Ghana in March. The second train is scheduled to be shipped in May and is anticipated to arrive in August.
“We are currently testing a commission on the Tema-Mpakadan line. It’s roughly 98 percent from Tema port to Mpakadan. To be able to commission and test the route, we bought two trains from Poland rather than 12. The first one will be dispatched in the middle of February, with a realistic arrival date of March,” Yaw Owusu informed Adom News.
He added that the second train would be transported in May and is expected to arrive in August. This clarification addresses misconceptions about the number of trains being acquired and underscores their specific purpose in the testing phase of the Tema-Mpakadan Railway line.
