The #FreeTheCitizens Movement is gearing up for a three-day protest in Accra from October 3 to October 5, 2024, to demand urgent action against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and its detrimental effects on the environment. Protesters will gather at 6 AM at Legon, Okponglo, before marching to Independence Square to raise awareness about unlawful detentions and the rampant environmental destruction caused by these activities.

The protest has garnered considerable support from various groups and public figures. Notably, Katanga Fellowood, a group from the University Hall at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), initially planned to participate collectively. However, after consultations, they announced their withdrawal out of respect for their leader, Odeefour. In their statement, Katanga Fellowood explained:

“This decision comes after extensive consultations led by the highest King of our land, Odeefour, who, in consultation with all stakeholders, has decided to boycott the demonstration.”

Despite their withdrawal from collective participation, the group reaffirmed their commitment to the cause, stating:

“While we may not join the demonstration in the collective manner originally planned, we stand firm in our resolve to continue the fight against the ills of society, including the devastating effects of galamsey on our green reserves and water resources.”

Additionally, Katanga Fellowood demonstrated their support by donating GHC 10,000 to assist with logistics and transportation for the protest organizers. They stated:

“Significant progress has been made towards handing over 10,000 Ghana cedis to the organizers of the demonstration to support the provision of logistics.”

In a show of solidarity, Sam Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has also pledged his support for the demonstration. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) dated September 26, he declared:

“Count me in. Citizens, no matter how uncomfortable, must be allowed to have a voice. I’d put my money where my heart and mouth is. Let’s go!”

The protest aims to challenge illegal mining activities and demand accountability from state authorities. Organizers emphasize that the #FreeTheCitizens Movement is not merely a protest but a “rallying call for every Ghanaian who believes in the power of democracy, justice, and environmental preservation.”

As preparations continue for this significant event, organizers are optimistic that a strong turnout will send a clear message to authorities about the urgent need for action against illegal mining and its environmental impacts.
