Residents of Abuakwa Asenemaso in the Ashanti Region’s Atwima Nwabiagya South District are shocked after a 55-year-old lady, Joyce Boateng, killed her 76-year-old mother, Afia Sarpomaa, over witchcraft suspicions. The tragedy happened in the morning of June 17, 2024.
Joyce Boateng, according to family leader George Badu Gyan, assaulted her mother, accusing her of employing witchcraft to bring the family sorrow. These accusations were reportedly bolstered by assertions from Boateng’s pastor, who convinced her that her mother was to blame for their problems.
Following the murder, Boateng tried suicide. Witnesses witnessed her walking to the cemetery in bloodstained clothes and buying a poisonous material from an agrochemical shop. Before she could swallow the poison, a community member stepped in to save her.
“The information I received is that she killed her mother at the time nobody was at home. Some people saw her going to the cemetery with her dress stained with blood and thought she wanted to kill herself. On her way, she picked up a drug from an agro-chemical shop and opened it. One of my nephews kicked it from her hand because everyone thought she was attempting to kill herself,” Badu Gyan recounted.
Boateng admitted to the crime after being brought to the police station. She stated that she had been informed that her mother was a witch by two pastors, a male and a female.

Boateng has three daughters and no history of mental illness, Badu Gyan underlined. “They sent her to the police station, and when we checked in with her later, she told us that her mother had killed her because two pastors had convinced her that her mother was a witch. She is free of mental health issues. She is the mother of three daughters,” he said.
Asenemaso Assemblyman Isaac Badu Boateng went with the police to the mortuary to drop off the victim’s body. “I was told about the event at around six in the morning, so I went to the police station.
She needed to be transported to the hospital because they claimed she drank poison. The body was brought to the mortuary by the police after we visited the graveyard. A woman murdered her mother. When we got to the police station, she admitted to the crime. She’s fifty-five years old,” he said.
He chastised certain pastors for causing divisions within families by accusing them of witchcraft, resulting in such unfortunate outcomes. “Most women seem to trust their pastors more than their husbands and family. According to this girl, a priest informed her that her mother is a witch. “You, the media, should educate some of the pastors because he polluted her mind to murder her mother,” he suggested.
The suspect is currently in police custody, and the deceased was taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for an autopsy. Authorities are still investigating the case.
