The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A) has announced plans to distribute 2,000 new street lights across the metropolitan area by the end of this week.
This initiative comes in response to growing concerns about malfunctioning street lights, which have been posing a safety threat to residents. The announcement was made during the Public Financial Management Town Hall Meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. The event aimed to account for government projects implemented through the Assembly since 2017.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, the Mayor of AMA, Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, acknowledged the issue of non-functional street lights but assured residents that the upcoming distribution would enhance nighttime safety. She emphasized the AMA’s commitment to efficiently utilizing public funds to improve the lives of residents.
Mayor Sackey highlighted several projects implemented by the Assembly, including the construction of a three-story, 18-unit classroom block for the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools, a two-unit kindergarten block for Bubiashie 1 Basic School, and a childcare centre at Old Fadama.
Additionally, she mentioned the distribution of 2,850 dual desks to public basic schools in the metropolis and Accra’s recognition as the 2023 World Book Capital to promote reading.
The event was attended by regional executives, local government officials, and community leaders, who gathered to review and account for the various government projects undertaken by the Assembly. Mayor Sackey encouraged residents to continue supporting the government, reiterating the Assembly’s dedication to improving living conditions in Accra.
