The Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd. (ECG) in the Accra West region has effectively retrieved one million, two hundred and seventy-seven thousand kWh of electricity from 1,390 customers who were engaged in various illicit activities.

Two million, three hundred and fifteen thousand, four hundred and twenty-three Ghana cedis (GH¢2,315,423.00) is the quantity of electricity that is being billed.

These clients were discovered during the company’s recently introduced “Fix the Bill and Pay the Bill” operation.

Commencing on Monday, November 6, 2023, and anticipated to end on December 11, the operation is being carried out concurrently throughout all of ECG’s operational domains.

The initiative’s goals are to record consumption readings for every postpaid user, guarantee correct billing, build customer trust in the billing procedure, and encourage prompt bill payment.

There are 59,416 postpaid users in the Accra West region out of 636,437 total consumers.

Mr. Emmanuel Akinie, General Manager of ECG Accra West, emphasized the benefits of the continuous exercise and added that the company is taking advantage of this chance to inspect the accuracy of all installed meters and collect unpaid debts.

“Our field staff are actively auditing the integrity of every meter they encounter in the field. We have so far uncovered instances where certain customers have been involved in illegal activities, stealing power and thereby depriving the Company of revenue from the services we are providing,” he said.

He went on to claim that the staff had discovered other clients who were not paying for the electricity they utilized because their meters were faulty.

According to him, the identified clients were sent to the nearest ECG office, where steps were taken to make up for the lost revenue and restore the clients’ relationship with the organization.

Mr. Akinie said that the corporation was in contact with law authorities to halt the trend and apologized for the latest reports of meters being stolen in specific places.

“We have reports of some syndicates who are stealing installed meters from customer premises. Together with the police and other agencies, we are on the hunt for such persons and we will do all within our power to bring them to book,” he said.

In Accra’s west, there are eight district offices. Nsawam, Korlebu, Kaneshie, Achimota, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, and Ablekuma are the districts in concern.
