The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has issued a warning, advising Ghanaians to prepare for an escalation in power outages in the upcoming weeks.
This alert from ACEP arises amidst mounting concerns regarding the reliability of Ghana’s electricity supply and the likelihood of increased disruptions in the near future.
The nation has been grappling with intermittent power outages, commonly known as ‘dumsor,’ which have inflicted adverse effects on businesses, households, and essential services. These outages have been attributed to various factors, including inadequate generation capacity, transmission constraints, and challenges in fuel procurement.

In a recent statement, Mr. Boakye, speaking on JOY TV’s Newsfile, revealed that political interference in gas procurement for thermal plants has aggravated the situation. He underscored the unsustainability of the government financing fuel purchases to maintain electricity supply, stressing the imperative for a more viable long-term resolution.
“While the government can currently procure fuel to keep the lights on, this approach is not sustainable. Sacrificing the budget to cover fuel costs is not a sustainable solution,” he remarked.
ACEP emphasizes that the prevailing circumstances demand immediate action from policymakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders to prevent an extended period of power instability.
