Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has been relieved of his duties.
On Monday, October 17, the Presidency confirmed his dismissal in a letter signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante.
According to the letter, the circumstances that necessitated his skills at the GES no longer exist.
“The Ministry of Education has informed this Office that the exigencies that required your skills and expertise as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service do not exist any longer.
“The President thanks you for your service to the nation and wishes you the very best in your future endeavors”, the letter said.
In January 2021, Prof. Opoku-Amankwa was appointed on secondment from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. His contract was renewed until June 2021.
The extension, however, was in “contravention of the Human Resource Policy Framework and manual of the Public Services Commission as it seeks to prolong your secondment beyond the 3-year maximum limit,” according to his dismissal letter.
Prof Opoku-Amankwa formerly served as Dean of the International Programmes Office (IPO) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), until being succeeded by Mr. Jacob Kor, who served as Director-General of the GES from January 2015 to April 2017.
