President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to commission the Flower Pot Interchange today, November 19, marking a significant achievement in Ghana’s transportation infrastructure.

Located along the Tema Motorway, the project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity between the northern and southern sections of this vital highway. Designed to enhance access to key areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema, the interchange promises to streamline traffic flow and improve the quality of life for residents and commuters.

Key features include an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct with asphaltic concrete surfacing, a 140-meter ramp from Shiashie leading to the viaduct towards Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp connecting the viaduct to the Motorway heading towards Tema.

The project also boasts a newly constructed road through the old tunnel at East Legon, a 200-meter road linking Cantonments to the Giffard Road Interchange, and a redesigned Flower Pot roundabout for smoother traffic movement.

Additional upgrades include pedestrian walkways, streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals to enhance safety and efficiency. Construction of the project began on March 7, 2017, undertaken by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited, with Deoke Consult Limited as consultants. Spanning 93 months, the project was funded by a partnership between Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana. Once operational, the interchange is expected to significantly reduce travel times and strengthen connectivity, reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to advancing its road network.
