In a distressing turn of events, around 70 stores at the Race Course market in Kumasi have fallen victim to yet another fire, just one week after a disastrous fire engulfed the French Line area of the Kumasi Central Market.
The latest incident occurred on Monday morning around 7 a.m., primarily affecting metal storage buildings that housed businesses dealing in secondhand clothes, cowhide, and regional spices.
The Ghana Fire Service promptly dispatched four fire engines to the scene, working tirelessly to extinguish the flames and prevent further damage. While no injuries were reported, the fire has left many traders in despair, having lost their livelihoods.
ACFO Henry Giwah, the Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana Fire Service, expressed concerns about safety procedures in the market. He highlighted that some vendors cook on-site using stoves and gas cylinders, emphasizing the potential hazards associated with such practices. The recent spate of fires has brought attention to the need for stringent safety measures and protocols within these market spaces.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire, aiming to determine the circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident. The inquiry will play a crucial role in understanding the factors contributing to the fires that have plagued Kumasi’s markets in recent weeks.
