Ghana’s All Time Top Scorer, Africa’s top scorer at the World Cup, BBC African Footballer of the Year 2010 Asamoah Gyan has officially retired from professional football.

The former forward for Sunderland and Stade Rennes retires as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals and second-most capped player.

Gyan said in a statement that he decided to hang up his boots because he thought the moment was right. Since his previous appearance at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Gyan hasn’t competed for the national team in more than four years.

The Black Stars, who were eliminated from the World Cup at the group stage last year, did not select the 37-year-old in their roster for that tournament. He last played for Ghana Premier League team Legon Cities two years ago, but he hasn’t been involved with the team since they parted ways.

Officially, as I conclude my remarks, Mr. President, Ministers of State, members of the board, fellow Speakers, nananom, nim3, and naam3, I want to take this great opportunity to discuss a difficult stage in every football player’s career and a moment that all players do not wish to experience, but when nature awakens, that thin voice will continue to resound in the ears.

That voice has been screaming in my ears, “IT’S TIME,” and I’ve given in. IT IS TIME TO HANG THE JERSEY AND BOOTS IN GLORY as I officially retire from active football, but then again, I am reminded by views shared by great businessmen and sporting gurus, “YOU DO NOT LEAVE YOUR LOVE”… Together with my management, we will continue encouraging and pushing young talents, as we did recently with the BABYJET U16 AFRICAN TOURNAMENT where 1,200 young players from across West Africa showcased their talents on live TV.

Once more, I’ll use my expertise and experience to the fields of coaching, business, and scouting in football. I want to thank my family, my friends from school, the Colts and Blackstar players from 2002 to the present, my club teammates, coaches, and everyone who has contributed to the success of my football career in my home nation of Ghana. I sayMany thanks. God be with us everyone.
