The conflict in Bawku has now claimed 21 lives following the tragic killing of a commercial driver, Maadi, who was ambushed en route to Bolgatanga on November 2. His vehicle was set ablaze, further heightening the tension in the region.
This recent surge in violence is associated with the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief whose disputed installation in Nalerigu led to an arrest warrant in February 2023.
However, an October 17 High Court ruling nullified the warrant, allowing his return to Bawku on October 24. This arrival has triggered a series of violent incidents, including fatal clashes that have intensified local unrest.

In response to the escalating violence, authorities have imposed a curfew from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, and security forces are actively engaged in maintaining order. Despite their presence, the situation remains volatile, as decades-old chieftaincy and ethnic disputes continue to fuel the conflict. Residents of Bawku and surrounding communities are deeply affected, with lives lost and tensions high, highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable peace-building approach.
