Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has pledged that, beginning December 1, 2024, kidney dialysis will be offered free of charge for all patients under Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
This announcement marks an expansion of a pilot programme that initially provided free dialysis only to patients over 60 and those under 18.

Speaking during his campaign in the Old Tafo constituency on Sunday, November 10, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the financial burden of dialysis treatment on many Ghanaian families. “Many people suffer from kidney diseases, requiring dialysis, which can be costly and unaffordable for many,” he noted. The six-month pilot programme aimed to ease this burden, and Dr. Bawumia shared that the successful outcomes of this initiative had paved the way for broader coverage.
Under the expanded programme, all NHIS-enrolled patients in need of dialysis will be eligible for free treatment. This development is expected to significantly benefit the growing number of Ghanaians managing kidney-related illnesses and alleviate the associated costs for affected households.
