CETAG Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Benefits

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike due to delays in the payment of outstanding arrears of allowances owed to its members. In a statement dated June 3, CETAG highlighted that their research allowances are in arrears and accused the government of disregarding a directive by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to make the payments.

CETAG emphasized that the NLC and the Ministry of Education have violated the Compulsory Arbitration Award issued on May 2, 2023, which should have ensured the payment of these arrears. This, they argue, is a violation of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which mandates all state institutions to respect the rule of law.

Furthermore, CETAG revealed that the salary of their national president has been frozen since August 2023, and some members have not received their salaries without any justifiable reason.

In response to these grievances, CETAG has stated that the strike will continue until their concerns are fully addressed. The union stressed its commitment to not tolerate further violations of their rights as workers, urging the NLC, the Ministry of Education, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to adhere to the Constitution of Ghana and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

CETAG reaffirmed their decision to proceed with the strike, making it clear to their employer that the action will not be called off until all outstanding Compulsory Arbitration Awards and related concerns are resolved through payments to their members.
