Charles Opoku has emerged as the clear choice of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates in the Assin North Constituency for the forthcoming by-elections on June 27. Opoku received a resounding mandate with 397 votes, leaving his sole contender, Frederick Freeman Amoah-Kyei, far behind with 136 votes.

The primary elections were conducted at the Church of Pentecost in Akonfodi, Assin Bereku, and witnessed the presence of NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and other national executives.

The announcement of the results sparked jubilation among Opoku’s supporters, who celebrated their candidate’s victory with great enthusiasm. The delegates expressed their joy and offered congratulations to Opoku, highlighting their confidence in his leadership abilities.

The upcoming by-election will witness a face-off between Charles Opoku and James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Assin North seat. Quayson had secured victory in the 2020 elections, defeating the incumbent Abena Durowaa Mensah.

However, a constituent challenged his election, claiming that Quayson had not renounced his Canadian citizenship prior to nomination. The Supreme Court upheld the challenge and ordered the removal of Quayson’s name from parliamentary records, leading to the need for the by-election.

As the chosen candidate of the NPP, Charles Opoku now prepares to compete against James Gyakye Quayson, with both parties vying to secure the Assin North seat in the upcoming by-election.
