Guinness World Records has responded to claims by Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith that he holds the new record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.
Chef Smith made this announcement at a press conference held at the La Palm Hotel on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, presenting a certificate that read: “The longest cooking marathon (individual) is 802 hours 25 minutes and was achieved by Ebenezer Smith (Ghanaian) in Spintex, Accra, Ghana. From 1 February to 6 March, 2024.” During the event, Chef Smith expressed his pride in supposedly becoming the new world record holder.

However, Alina Polianskaya, a PR Executive for Guinness World Records, has debunked Chef Smith’s claim. In a reply to an inquiry by Joy FM’s Kwame Dadzie, Polianskaya stated that Chef Smith does not hold the title and that the certificate he presented is not authentic. The legitimate record, as per Polianskaya, is held by Alan Fisher from Ireland, who completed a cooking marathon lasting 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023.
Further correspondence between Graphic Showbiz and Guinness World Records confirmed that they had no record or application of Chef Smith’s attempt. PR Manager Madalyn Biefield reiterated that Guinness World Records is unaware of Chef Smith’s cooking marathon. Despite these clarifications, Benny, the manager of Chef Smith, provided what they believe to be proof of their record validation to Hitz FM.
