The chief of Banka, a farming community in the Asante Akyem South Municipality of the Eastern Region, has been sentenced to three months in jail by an Accra High Court for misappropriating $150,000 meant for community development.
The funds, donated by Gold Coast Company in 2010, were supposed to be used for much-needed projects in Banka, a community lacking basic amenities such as toilet facilities. However, the 65-year-old chief, Nana Twiampomah III (also known as Frederick Kofi Frimpong), pocketed the money, denying his community the improvements they desperately needed.
During the sentencing on Tuesday, July 23, High Court Judge Comfort K. Tasiame explained that she was lenient due to the chief’s age. Besides the three-month jail term, Nana Twiampomah III was fined 2,000 penalty units. If he fails to pay the fine, he will face an additional five years in prison.
Community members who attended the court session expressed their satisfaction with the judgement. They shared their frustration over the chief’s actions, highlighting how his greed left their community without even basic facilities like toilets.
