A Chinese illegal miner, also known as a “galamseyer,” has made controversial claims regarding the ongoing crackdown on illegal mining activities in Ghana.
According to the miner, the operation is allegedly being orchestrated by former President John Dramani Mahama with the aim of preventing President Nana Akufo-Addo and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) from extracting all the country’s gold before Mahama potentially returns to power.
The claims have stirred debate, particularly given the long-standing political and environmental issues surrounding illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.
Successive governments, including those led by both the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), have faced criticism for not adequately addressing the impact of illegal mining on the environment, especially in terms of deforestation, water pollution, and loss of livelihoods.
The issue of galamsey continues to be a contentious subject in Ghana’s political landscape, with both parties blaming each other for failing to resolve it effectively. The alleged statement by the Chinese miner adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing discourse surrounding the country’s mining sector and the political dynamics involved.
