Former Ghanaian football captain, Asamoah Gyan, made headlines in 2018 when he filed for divorce from his wife, Gifty Gyan, after five years of marriage.
The divorce proceedings were marked by several contentious issues, including Gyan’s denial of fathering their three children and his request for a DNA test to determine their paternity. Recently, the court has reached a verdict on this high-profile case.
In a significant turn of events, the DNA test results confirmed that Asamoah Gyan is indeed the biological father of all three children, thereby putting an end to the paternity dispute.

While the DNA results resolved the paternity issue, the court decided not to grant Gifty Gyan’s request for alimony. This decision was made after careful consideration of the evidence presented during the divorce proceedings.
The court recognized that Asamoah Gyan and Gifty Gyan had engaged in a “paper marriage” in 2002 when Gifty Gyan was just 17 years old. However, this was not deemed a valid ground for declaring the 2013 marriage void. Instead, the court issued a decree of nullity, effectively annulling the 2013 marriage.
In addition to the annulment, the court ruled on the division of assets between the former couple. Gifty Gyan was granted a share of Asamoah Gyan’s property, which includes a house in the UK, a fuel station in Prampram, a 4-bedroom house in Spintex (which was purchased before the 2013 marriage), and two cars (an Infinity and a BMW).
Furthermore, the court presided over by Hafisata Ameleboba JA granted Gifty Gyan a monthly maintenance fee of GHC 25,000 to support her financial needs.
