Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to limit the number of ministers and deputy ministers to no more than 50 if he is elected as the President of Ghana.
This is a departure from the approach of his predecessor, President Akufo-Addo, who appointed 110 ministers, ministers of state, and deputies in 2017, which was the highest number in the country’s history.
Dr. Bawumia made this announcement during a speech in Accra on February 7, 2024, where he outlined his vision for the country if he assumes the presidency.

As the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he emphasized the importance of having a leaner government structure to effectively manage Ghana’s resources.
By advocating for a reduction in the number of ministers, Dr. Bawumia aims to decrease the cost of governance and promote the efficient utilization of Ghana’s limited resources. He stressed the need for prudent resource allocation and highlighted the benefits of streamlining government operations to foster fiscal responsibility.
This declaration reflects Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to implementing measures that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the government, should he be elected as the President of Ghana.
