Driver, labourer grabbed for stealing free SHS food items

Two people were detained by police in Atebu, in the Bono East Region, for allegedly stealing food supplies thought to belong to the Atebubu Senior High School.

Following a tip-off, Okine Kwaku and Bawa Awudu Moro, a driver and a laborer at the Atebubu Senior High School, were both taken into custody on Friday, April 21, 2023.

The arrest comes after a string of theft incidents involving food belonging to senior high schools in the municipality, according to reports.

From the home of one of the suspects, a total of 10 bags of rice, 25 bags of beans, 50 bags of 50kg maize, and 25 liters (Kufuor Gallon) of cooking oil were found.

One of the suspects, Bawa Awudu Moro, was busy repackaging the grains, beans, and maize into various sacks at the time of the arrest.

Reports state that a team of police officers stormed Bawa’s home, where the commodities were being kept, and took him into custody while bringing the food supplies to the police station.

A few witnesses claimed that trucks had been bringing food supplies to the scene without them knowing that the commodities had been stolen.

“The food supplies have always been delivered to the location but we never suspected that they were intended for the students,” one source said.

When the Atebubu-Amantin Municipality’s Municipal Chief Executive, Edward Owusu, was called, he verified the arrest and the recovery of the food supplies but declined to provide any other information until the police had finished their investigations.

“I can confirm the arrest and the recovery of all the food items from where they were been kept but the matter is with the police now so let us allow the police to finish their investigations in line with the rule of law.”

The two suspects will be presented to the court on May 25, 2023, according to independent research conducted by this writer, while the police work feverishly to capture further suspects.
