In the general election of 2024, the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) is recommending a change to the poll closing time. Specifically, it suggests that voting should end at 3 pm instead of the customary 5 pm.
The objective of this suggested modification is to improve the electoral process’s efficiency and transparency.

Jean Mensa, the EC Chairperson, referenced the results of the 2020 election, pointing out that at 1 pm, around 70% of polling places had few or no voters.
This was explained by the fact that more polling places were opened, which sped up the voting process. The plan is to keep building multiple polling places that can hold up to 500 people apiece in an effort to shorten the voting period.
“We are convinced that closing the polls at 3 pm will enable counting and collating to take place in broad daylight and promote the needed transparency and orderliness we so desire. We trust that our Parliament will support this drive to ensure greater transparency and orderliness in our electoral process,” Mrs Mensa said.
