The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has issued a strong advisory to political parties, urging them to prevent their regional and constituency executives from facilitating the transportation of children and foreigners to voter registration centers.

Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Electoral Commissioner, emphasized the critical role of political parties in maintaining the integrity of the voter register and condemned any actions that compromise the electoral process.

Dr. Asare expressed concern over reports indicating that certain members of political parties are encouraging minors and non-Ghanaians to register as voters. He specifically cited an incident in the Western Region, where two individuals were apprehended by the police for allegedly facilitating the registration of five minors in Mpohor.

In response to these developments, the Deputy Electoral Commissioner called upon parents to dissuade their children under the age of 18 from attempting to register as voters. This appeal underscores the importance of upholding legal and ethical standards in voter registration to preserve the democratic principles of Ghana’s electoral system.

The EC’s stance reflects a firm commitment to conducting voter registration processes in accordance with established laws and regulations. By addressing these issues, the EC aims to uphold the credibility and legitimacy of elections in Ghana.

Dr. Asare further emphasized the need for political parties to actively discourage their regional and constituency executives from engaging in activities that undermine the electoral process. He stressed that attempts to support the registration of minors and foreigners are unacceptable and pose a threat to the country’s electoral democracy.

The Deputy Electoral Commissioner called upon law enforcement agencies, particularly the Police, to enforce the law on individuals involved in facilitating the registration of minors and foreigners. This enforcement is intended to serve as a deterrent and uphold the integrity of the voter registration process.
