The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) task force disconnected Parliament from the national grid due to the House’s GH₵23 million debt to the distribution company.
The disconnection led to a power outage in the chamber of Parliament and MPs’ offices, causing inconvenience to workers and members, including individuals stuck in elevators.
Firefighters were called in to rescue those affected. As a response to the disconnection, Parliament has reportedly settled over GH₵10 million of the debt, and power has been restored to the legislative body.
The power outage occurred during parliamentary debates on President Akufo-Addo’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA). The incident prompted chants of “Dumsor, dumsor!” (a term often used to describe power outages) from the minority side of the house.
This event unfolded amid existing complaints from many Ghanaians about intermittent power supplies in the country.
