Former President John Dramani Mahama has been declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, marking a historic return to power after an intensely competitive race.

The Electoral Commission (EC) announced on Monday, December 9, that Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the valid votes cast, defeating his main contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 4,657,304 votes, amounting to 41.61%.

This victory also bolstered the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which secured a majority in Parliament with over 160 confirmed seats, including key constituencies traditionally held by the NPP. The NDC’s parliamentary success strengthens Mahama’s mandate as he prepares to lead the nation once again.

The election recorded a voter turnout of 60.9%, with the process described as largely peaceful, though isolated incidents of violence and logistical challenges were reported in constituencies such as Damongo, Ablekuma Central, and Okaikwei North.

In a gracious concession speech, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged Mahama’s victory and called for unity, urging his supporters to accept the outcome peacefully. “We have fought a good fight. The people have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of moving forward as a nation.

Mahama, who previously served as President from 2012 to 2016, is set to be sworn in on January 7, 2025. His upcoming address to the nation is expected to outline his vision and priorities for his second term. Observers, both local and international, have commended the EC for conducting a transparent and credible election despite logistical hurdles.

This election marks a significant political shift, as Mahama’s victory aligns with forecasts by polling organizations such as the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Global InfoAnalytics, and Fitch, which had predicted a win for the opposition. The NDC’s commanding majority in Parliament further solidifies Mahama’s position, providing a strong foundation for his administration as he tackles the challenges of the next four years.
