England have qualified for the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a game to spare in their group, following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Albania on Monday. This result also secures progression for the Netherlands and France from Group D into the knockout stage.
Despite having one more Group C match to play against Slovenia on Tuesday in Cologne (20:00 BST), England are already guaranteed a spot in the next phase. Gareth Southgate’s side currently has four points, having secured a 1-0 win against Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Denmark. The defeat of Albania ensures that England will be among the four best third-placed teams at the very least.

If England win their final group match against Slovenia, they will top Group C. They could still finish first if they draw and Denmark fails to beat Serbia. Should England and Denmark both draw their matches, the tie for the top spot will be decided based on overall goal difference, followed by goals scored, and then disciplinary points. England cannot finish lower than third in Group C.
If Albania had beaten Spain, England’s qualification would have been uncertain until their game on Tuesday. However, Spain’s performance ensured England’s advancement. Spain, champions in 1964, 2008, and 2012, proved too strong for Albania.
Potential Opponents for England in the Last 16:

Currently, Austria is third in Group D, while all four teams in Group E – Romania, Belgium, Slovakia, and Ukraine – are tied with three points each. The Czech Republic is third in Group F, level on points but with a better goal difference than fourth-placed Georgia.
- If England finish as runners-up: They will face hosts Germany in Dortmund on Saturday (20:00 BST).
- If England finish third in Group C: They will play either Group F winners Portugal in Frankfurt on Monday, 1 July (20:00 BST) or the Group E winners in Munich on Tuesday, 2 July (17:00 BST).
