Former CalBank Managing Director Frank Adu Jr has advocated for Ghana to transition from a multi-party to a two-party political system. He made this suggestion while speaking at the Conversation Under the Baobab Tree: Ɔdadeɛ National Dialogue, themed “So Much Things to Say,” held in Accra on Wednesday.
Mr. Adu highlighted the need for the country to officially acknowledge its effective operation as a two-party system. He argued, “Let us agree to abandon multiparty democracy and introduce a duo party democracy.
That is to say, let us officially recognize that we have two parties because effectively that is what we have but let us officially recognize that we have two parties. This is controversial but hear me out.”

In addition, Mr. Adu called for the abolition of party manifestos. He criticized these documents for containing unrealistic promises that often disregard national finances and long-term economic impacts. “Let us abolish party manifestoes which only make flowery promises some of which are frankly puerile and unrealistic but most dangerously are made without recourse to the effects on national finances and long-term effects on the economy,” he stated.
