In a surprising turn of events, Abraham Asare, a 52-year-old former employee of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), found himself in police custody in Larteh for allegedly stealing 23 pieces of crucial 8-inch ductile iron pipes.
Asare, who had resigned from the GWCL’s Amanorkrom office in 2022, was apprehended on December 12 in connection with the attempted theft.

The stolen pipes, integral components of an active distribution mainline supplying water to Larteh and its surrounding areas, hold significant importance for the community’s water supply. The police, responding to a distress call around 6:30 p.m. on December 12, discovered Asare and his accomplices in the act of loading the stolen pipes onto a KIA truck.
Each 8-inch ductile iron pipe is valued at approximately GH¢13,000, leading to a total cost of GH¢299,000 for the stolen products.
The financial impact of such theft not only affects the GWCL but also puts strain on resources earmarked for maintaining and improving water supply infrastructure.

The incident comes amidst a series of challenges faced by the GWCL, including thefts ranging from electric wires at treatment plants to the removal of metallic coverings from chambers and meter theft. These incidents underscore the need for heightened security measures and vigilance to safeguard critical infrastructure.
