Samson Deen, President of the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana (NPC-Ghana), revealed that four relatives of the deceased coach George Gyamfi Gyasi, who were sent to retrieve his body, absconded upon arriving in Norway.
During an interview on Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday, July 22, Deen explained that the initial group of six or seven people, who had their visas denied, forged the necessary letters and subsequently absconded upon arrival, with one person dying.
When the NPC-Ghana later requested to send the deceased coach’s relatives to retrieve the corpse, these four individuals also absconded without fulfilling their mission.
This incident follows criticism of NPC-Ghana after some para-athletes, who traveled for the Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon, disappeared upon arrival in Oslo.
According to a statement from the Ministry of National Security, 11 athletes were supposed to participate in the marathon but failed to register, with one member of the contingent arrested trying to enter Sweden.
The team’s coach, George Gyamfi Gyasi, died at Oslo University Hospital. Deen described the supposed athletes as imposters and confirmed that the relatives sent to retrieve the coach’s body also ran away.
