President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has nominated Freda Prempeh as the Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation designate, following the resignation of Cecilia Abena Dapaah due to the stolen money scandal.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Office of the President on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.
“The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has appointed the Minister of State at the Presidency and Member of Parliament for Tano North, Hon. Freda Prempeh, as the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources. She takes over from Hon. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, whose letter of resignation, dated Saturday, 22nd July 2023, was accepted by the President on Saturday, 22. July 2023.”
Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the former Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, resigned from her position over the weekend in the wake of an alleged million-dollar cash theft by housekeepers at her residence. The scandal prompted her decision to step down from her ministerial role.
As part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged cash theft, Cecilia Abena Dapaah was held in custody by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for several hours. The OSP conducted searches at both her official residence in Cantonments and her private residence in Abelemekpe.

On Monday, July 24, 2023, Mrs. Dapaah was taken to her official residence in Cantonments, where the OSP officials conducted a thorough search as part of the investigation. Subsequently, her residence in Abelemekpe was also searched by agents of the Special Prosecutor.
With Freda Prempeh nominated as the Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation designate, she is set to take over the portfolio from Cecilia Abena Dapaah, subject to approval by the appropriate authorities. The appointment comes at a critical time when the Ministry is dealing with the aftermath of the alleged stolen money scandal, and it is expected that Freda Prempeh will assume her role with a focus on addressing the challenges in the water and sanitation sector in Ghana.
