President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has addressed calls for a more targeted approach to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, suggesting that individuals who can afford private school fees should consider sending their children to private institutions. This response follows concerns that the Free SHS policy is putting a strain on the national budget.
The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Acheampong Boafo, had earlier proposed that wealthy families contribute by paying school fees, allowing the government to focus more resources on underprivileged students.

Speaking at the 2024/2025 Annual General Conference of the GBA in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo defended the policy, stating that public schools, which are funded by taxpayer money, must remain free for all, especially those who would otherwise be unable to afford secondary education.
He highlighted that the Free SHS policy has doubled access to secondary education since its introduction, with over 5.7 million students benefitting from the program. Akufo-Addo added that the long-term impact of the policy will outweigh the concerns of a small number of affluent families who can afford to pay for their children’s education.
He reiterated, “Public schools that are funded by the taxpayer should be free to all who will otherwise be unable to pay for their education.”
