The rising cost of ingredients used in the preparation of Ga kenkey, a traditional delicacy in Accra, may soon lead to price adjustments by sellers.

Reports indicate that owners of Ga kenkey joints in areas like Adabraka, Osu, Tudu, and Jamestown are facing notable increases in ingredient costs.

For example, the price of a bag of pepper, a crucial component in kenkey sauce, has reached GH¢800. As a result, many sellers are contemplating incorporating the costs of pepper, onions, and tomatoes into their production expenses.

One visible consequence of this situation is that the previously complimentary pepper sauce, typically served with kenkey and consisting of ground pepper, onions, and tomatoes, may no longer be provided free of charge. This change could represent a significant shift for patrons who have long appreciated the affordability and accessibility of Ga kenkey.

Kenkey is a beloved staple dish, particularly among the Gas, known for its affordability. It is commonly served with pepper sauce and fried fish, while more upscale establishments may offer additional toppings like avocados, shrimp, and fried eggs.

In interviews with The Mirror, some Ga kenkey sellers expressed concern about the escalating ingredient costs. They highlighted the exorbitant price of pepper, which now stands at GH¢800 per bag. This increase has made it challenging for sellers to meet customers’ desired quantity of pepper sauce, leading to dissatisfaction among certain patrons.

Hajia, a seller at the Kenkey Boutique Company Ltd in Adabraka, shared her struggles in meeting customer demand for pepper sauce due to the rising ingredient costs. Despite being aware of the insufficient quantity she serves, she is unable to provide more pepper to customers given the high expenses involved.

Overall, the escalating costs of ingredients are likely to have a significant impact on the affordability and accessibility of Ga kenkey in Accra, potentially altering the dining experience for many patrons.
