The leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has demonstrated a powerful act of patriotism and compassion by donating their one-month basic salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.
The fund, an initiative championed by President John Dramani Mahama, is designed to provide critical medical support to Ghanaians battling life-threatening conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney failure, stroke, and other serious illnesses.
On Friday, May 16, the GAF Service Commanders, led by the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General William Agyapong, made a courtesy call to present their contribution.
“We are deeply moved by the mission of the Mahama Cares fund,” Brig. Gen. Agyapong stated. “Knowing that vulnerable citizens suffering from severe medical conditions will benefit from this initiative compelled us to contribute. That is why my command and I have decided to donate our one-month basic salary to support this national cause.”
In a heartfelt response, President Mahama expressed profound gratitude for the military’s contribution.
“This is a touching display of true patriotism,” Mahama said. “It shows that beyond your duty of safeguarding our nation’s borders, you also carry the burden of our people’s pain. You are not just defenders with weapons — you are human beings with heart and soul. On behalf of all Ghanaians, I thank you.”
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is a social health initiative aimed at alleviating the financial burden of medical treatment for Ghanaians, especially those from low-income backgrounds facing serious health challenges. The fund targets conditions that are often prohibitively expensive to manage, such as cancer treatments, dialysis, surgeries, and long-term rehabilitative care.
The Armed Forces’ donation has sparked admiration nationwide and is being hailed as a call to action for other public and private institutions to join in supporting the fund.
