Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to manage the rising water levels at the Weija Dam by spilling excess water in order to prevent potential risks to lives and properties.
In a letter dated Thursday, March 7, 2024, GWL stated that the onset of rains had led to a steady increase in water levels at the dam, necessitating controlled spilling. The company underscored the importance of this action in averting any potential disasters.
The spilling process will commence at a low rate, with adjustments made based on the incoming flow of water into the dam. GWL aims to minimize downstream impacts while ensuring the dam’s integrity.

Continuation of the spilling will depend on the water level at the dam, as a precautionary measure against the risk of collapse. GWL acknowledged the potential inconveniences resulting from the operation and expressed regret for any disruptions caused.
In its statement, GWL reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and mitigating the impact of this natural phenomenon.
It emphasized that the controlled spilling of excess water from the Weija Dam demonstrates responsible stewardship of Ghana’s water resources, with a priority on the well-being of downstream communities.
