Elorm Ama Ababio, also known as Ama Governor, a Ghanaian social media influencer and aspiring lawyer, has publicly affirmed her queer identity.

During an interview on Joy News on September 23, 2023, conducted during the #OccupyJulorbihouse demonstration in Accra, she underlined that her sexual orientation should not impact her qualifications to become a lawyer.

Ama Governor, who faced initial denial of access to the bar due to a petition against her, revealed that she has triumphed in the case and is scheduled to be called to the bar in October 2023.

She clarified that the petition, which initially led to her denial, contained allegations that were ultimately found to be unsubstantiated.

Regarding the delay in her call to the bar, she mentioned: “…because a concerned citizen petitioned that I was not fit to be called to the bar, they gave two fallacious grounds and one insufficient ground, which all got thrown out, and basically, I won in conclusion.

She added “And the last one is the fact of my sexuality that I sleep with women. I said that is not a lie; I do sleep with women, that is a fact. But it is not grounds for me to not be called to the bar, and that is it.

In a recent report by the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) representative on the General Legal Council, it has been affirmed that Ama Governor has been granted permission to finalize the application procedures for her call to the bar during the October/November 2023 sessions.

The report also outlined that her behavior will be under observation in the period leading up to the submission of her application to be called to the Bar. Additionally, she will be required to sign an undertaking to maintain good conduct while practicing as a lawyer in Ghana.
