Ghanaian Pilgrim Dies During Hajj in Makkah

A Ghanaian pilgrim, Hajia Yussif Hawabu, has died while undertaking this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

The 63-year-old, reportedly a native of Tamale, collapsed and passed away on Thursday, 15 May 2025, inside the Masjid Al-Haram (Grand Mosque). According to the Administrator of the Hajj Task Force of Ghana, Ismaila Skones, the incident occurred during the performance of Tawaf—the ritual of walking around the Kaaba—alongside other Ghanaian pilgrims.

Following Islamic tradition, the late Hajia Hawabu has since been laid to rest in Makkah.

Mr Skones extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and reassured the public that all necessary health and safety measures are in place to protect the remaining Ghanaian pilgrims.

This year, approximately 6,000 Ghanaians are participating in the Hajj pilgrimage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
