The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed the detection of two cases of Mpox in the Accra Metropolitan Area, prompting swift public health measures to prevent further spread.
In a press release issued on Thursday evening, the Acting Director General of the GHS stated that contact tracing has been initiated to identify and monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.
“Upon confirmation of these two cases, the Ghana Health Service has immediately initiated contact tracing efforts to identify individuals who may have come into contact with the confirmed cases,” the statement read.
The Ministry of Health and the GHS are collaborating to implement containment protocols, with a focus on early detection and responsive care.
Mpox is a viral infection transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials. Symptoms commonly include fever, rash, headaches, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm, assuring that there is no immediate cause for alarm. The country’s public health infrastructure, they said, remains on high alert and is following all established protocols for disease surveillance, management, and control.
Identified contacts will be monitored closely and provided with medical support as needed.
The GHS reiterated its commitment to keeping the public informed and protecting citizens through rapid response and ongoing surveillance.
