Government has imposed a fine of $6 million on Maxam Ghana Limited

The company at the centre of the explosion that occurred at Appiate in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region on 21st January which killed some 13 people and the flattened community.

According to a press statement issued by the Minister, the amount is a $1 million and a $5 million fine or its cedi equivalent at the prevailing commercial rate, which the company agreed with the Ministry to pay to government after extensive discussions.

Although the penalties for the said breaches, pursuant to L.I. 2177, ranges between GH₵600 to $10,000, Mr Jinapor imposed a hefty fine due to “the nature and the totality of the circumstance leading to this tragic incident.”
