Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, announced that Minister for Roads, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has received cabinet approval to begin reintroducing road tolls. This update came during the presentation of the 2024 mid-year budget statement.
Oppong-Nkrumah informed the media that the cabinet has already given the green light for the process. “The Minister for Roads has received Cabinet approval to start the process of reintroducing these tolls,” he stated.
Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, while presenting the mid-year budget, mentioned that the framework for reintroducing road and bridge tolls is slated for 2025.
The government had initially suspended road toll collections in November 2021 to alleviate traffic congestion at toll booths and anticipated that the e-levy would cover road maintenance costs. However, the e-levy has not generated the expected revenue, prompting a reconsideration of road tolls.
Additionally, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, recently suggested reintroducing tolls during his campaign tour in the Volta Region.
