Minister for Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that the recent crackdown on organised street begging in Accra is only the beginning of a wider national campaign aimed at addressing the issue across the country.

In an update posted on his official Facebook page, the Minister revealed that a coordinated operation led by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) resulted in the arrest of 2,241 foreign nationals engaged in street begging in various parts of the Greater Accra Region. The operation, which took place in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, was described as intelligence-driven and targeted well-known hotspots across the capital.

Among those apprehended were 909 adults and 1,332 children, comprising 961 males and 1,280 females. Muntaka described the effort as part of a broader strategy to uphold public order and enhance national security.

He praised the immigration personnel for their dedication and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to extending the operation beyond the capital. “I want to commend the personnel of GIS for their commitment to national security,” he stated. “I’ve seen the public’s feedback and calls for similar actions in Kumasi, Tamale, and other communities. Be assured that this is a nationwide initiative, starting in Accra but soon reaching other regions.”

As preparations are made to expand the exercise across Ghana, the Minister called for cooperation from the public. He urged residents in other parts of the country to support the initiative when it reaches their communities.

“I count on your continued cooperation and support when the operations reach your communities,” he said, appealing for collective responsibility to help maintain safe and orderly public spaces.
