The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is advocating for a 30% increase in transport fares to address the financial challenges faced by drivers.
Samuel Amoah, Deputy Public Relations Officer of GPRTU, highlighted ongoing discussions with the Transport Ministry aimed at finding solutions to alleviate the financial burden on drivers while ensuring sustainable service delivery.

This proposal represents a departure from GPRTU’s previous attempt to implement a 20% fare hike, which faced rejection earlier due to procedural issues. Amoah expressed confidence that the Ministry would recognize the pressing need for fare adjustments to support transport operators and uphold essential services.
He explained, “The Ministry therefore invited us for a conversation, an invitation we accepted and presented all our reasons for the 20 percent increment. Even at that time, the fuel price wasn’t as it is now.”
Amoah elaborated on the factors considered in determining the proposed increase, including the rising costs of spare parts, lubricants, DVLA, and insurance taxes. He expressed optimism that the Ministry would endorse their proposal, enabling drivers to operate with greater financial stability and continue serving the nation effectively.
