The National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed his belief that James Gyakye Quayson’s decisive victory in the Assin North by-election signifies a forthcoming victory for the NDC in the national polls of 2024.

Sammy Gyamfi asserts that the by-election was not merely about electing a representative to Parliament but rather served as a referendum on the performance of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Gyamfi emphasized the significance of the victory, stating, “…The real work is recapturing power in the 2024 election which for me, it is what this victory signifies.” His comment follows James Gyakye Quayson’s success in the by-election held on Tuesday.

Gyamfi believes that the vote by the constituents of Assin North reflects a weariness among Ghanaians towards the leadership of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government. He suggests that the electorate is tired of fiscal mismanagement, economic hardships, and the overall perceived failure of the current government.

Gyamfi remains confident that change is imminent and that the NDC will prevail in the upcoming national elections on December 7, 2024.

In response to Gyamfi’s assertions, Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the NPP, downplayed the significance of the NDC’s win in Assin North. Ahiagbah argued that the Assin North seat was expected to be won by the NDC, just as the Kumawu seat was anticipated to be won by the NPP.

He emphasized that if the NPP had won the Assin North seat, it would have been a stronger indication of their future prospects. Ahiagbah deemed Gyamfi’s conclusions as convenient, suggesting that he would have drawn similar conclusions if their positions were reversed.
