Alex Opoku-Mensah, the National Service Secretariat’s (NSS) Ashanti Regional Director, has issued an unequivocal apologies for verbally abusing a nurse at the Manhyia Hospital.
A two-year-old convulsion patient’s incorrect prescription was fixed by the nurse after his daughter made it.
On Facebook, Mr. Opoku-Mensah claimed that his approach to resolving the argument between his daughter, a doctor, and the nurse “has never been my manner.”
He believed the involved nurse to be his daughter as well, and he tried to resolve the conflict between the two.
He felt regret for his actions as a result.
“I do apologise for any mishap and assure all, there shall not be a repetition of such,” he promised.
Mr. Opoku Mensah allegedly entered the surgical ward of the hospital, where his daughter is working as a house officer, on Monday morning and verbally abused and threatened the nurse.
Eyewitnesses claim that the medical officer gave the incorrect dosage to a two-year-old convulsion child.
The young doctor was summoned by the nurse to correct the incorrect medication when she realized the medical error.
However, according to sources, the house officer took offense and complained to her father, who later went to the medical center to verbally abuse the nurse.
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has since published a statement requesting Mr. Opoku-immediate Mensah’s resignation from office for the inappropriate behavior.
“The Public Services Commission and Government for that matter should sack the said Regional Director immediately because he is not fit for the director position he holds in public service.
“He had absolutely no right to enter Manhyia hospital and verbally abuse and threaten the nurse in question who was on duty at the time,” the statement read.
If Mr. Opoku-Mensah is not fired within the next 72 hours, the nurses vowed to call on their employees at the facility to boycott work.
