Herbert Wigwe, CEO of Access Holdings Plc, Dies in Tragic Helicopter Crash

Herbert Wigwe, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, has tragically passed away in a helicopter crash near the California-Nevada border.

The accident occurred on Friday night, and Wigwe was accompanied by his wife, son, and three others on board the helicopter.

The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that the crash involved a Eurocopter EC130 helicopter and took place near Nipton, California, an unincorporated community located approximately 60 miles south of Las Vegas in eastern San Bernardino County.

According to reports from the New York Times, as of Saturday morning, authorities have been unable to locate any survivors. Sources indicate that the U.S. government has confirmed that all individuals on board the helicopter have tragically lost their lives.

Mr. Herbert Wigwe began his professional career at Coopers & Lybrand Associates, an international firm of Chartered Accountants. He then spent more than 10 years at Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, where he held various positions, including managing financial institutions, large corporates, and multinationals.

In March 2002, Wigwe left Guaranty Trust Bank to join Access Bank Plc as Deputy Managing Director, playing a key role in the bank’s transformation. He later assumed the position of Group Managing Director/CEO on January 1, 2014, and served in that capacity until May 2022. Following his tenure as CEO, he was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of the bank.

Wigwe pursued further education at the Harvard Business School, completing the Executive Management Programme. He also holds a master’s degree in Banking and International Finance from the University College of North Wales, a master’s degree in Financial Economics from the University of London, and a B.Sc. degree in Accounting from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

As a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Wigwe has demonstrated his expertise in the field. He has taken on significant roles in various organizations, including serving as Chairman of The Access Bank (UK) Ltd and as a Non-Executive Director of Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company Plc, FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange, Shared Agents Network Expansion Facilities Ltd, and Agri-Business/ SME Enterprises Investment Scheme. Additionally, he has been a member of the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.
