In a bid to break the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual, Afua Asantewaa Aduonum, a talented singer and entrepreneur from Ghana, has garnered unexpected support from none other than Shatta Wale, the self-proclaimed dancehall king of Ghana.
During her appearance on Kafui Dey’s breakfast show on GTV, Afua shared her emotional experience upon learning that Shatta Wale was backing her initiative. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she revealed breaking into tears when she discovered that Shatta Wale not only supported her singing marathon but expressed his hope to attend the event.
To make her marathon performance smoother, Afua has requested Shatta Wale to email her the lyrics to some of his songs, particularly the patois lyrics, stating, “I’m finding it difficult to get the words right.”
Afua’s ambitious goal is to sing continuously for at least 117 hours, showcasing the diversity of Ghanaian music. The marathon is scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, on December 24 and 27.
Currently, the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual is held by Sunil Waghmare, who achieved the feat in Nagpur, India, between March 3 and 7, 2012.
In an unexpected turn of events, the venue for Afua’s record-breaking attempt has shifted from the Aviation Social Center to Akwaaba Village, next to the Airport Roundabout, due to the overwhelming interest and support from the public. The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) officially announced its partnership with Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum in a press release on December 12, 2023.
“The change in venue is to help accommodate the huge numbers who have expressed interest in attending to support our own Afua Asantewaa, break the record,” the GTA stated in the press release, emphasizing the tremendous support and enthusiasm surrounding Afua’s groundbreaking initiative.
