Ghana’s untouched top scorer, Asamoah Gyan, says his choice to play at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON) cost him a transition to English Premier League giants Manchester City.

Gyan, who at the time was playing for Italian Serie A side Udinese, was a long way from his best as he battled with injury and wellness concerns which likewise drew enormous reactions from Ghanaians, who were anticipating that the Black Stars should win the opposition.

Yet, for the intercession of Ghana’s leader at that time,John Agyekum Kuffour, the player would have left the Black Stars camp as he felt the reactions were cruel.

In any case, Gyan in an interview, says his penance to play the Could 2008 saw him at any point pass up a transition to Man City, who later marked Emmanuel Adebayor.

“Before CAN 2008, Man City were interested in signing me. Sven-Göran Eriksson was the coach at that time and they were keen to sign me,” he told Dan Kwaku Yeboah television.

“My manager asked that I go and treat [some pains I had been feeling before the AFCON] and then I sign for Man City but I told him that I wanted to play at the Africa Cup of Nations,in light of the fact that it would have been my first one and was going to be hosted by Ghana.

“So when Ghanaians criticized me I was pained a lot because I left a lot of money to sacrifice and play at the tournament but they didn’t appreciate it.
They went ahead to go sign Adebayor after they had missed out on me.”

Gyan, in spite of not playing dynamic football since leaving Legon cities in 2021, has neglected to declared his retirement from football .
He still serves as one of Ghanas top goal scorer of all time.
