Ghanaian rap icon, Emmanuel Kofi Botwe, better known as Kwaw Kese, recently shared a captivating narrative of his early struggles and unwavering determination to pursue his musical aspirations in an exclusive interview on Daybreak Hitz at Hitz FM.
The “Awoyoo Sofo” artist fondly recalls the challenging days when he would trek long distances, notably walking all the way from Ashaiman to North Kaneshie, just to record tracks.
Reflecting on the pivotal moments that molded his unique persona, Kwaw Kese unveiled the origin of his distinctive stage name, revealing that it stemmed from the grueling journeys he undertook on foot.
“I used to trek from Ashaiman to North Kaneshie to Hush Hush Studios. During that time, I realized my lifestyle was akin to that of a madman. I was building my brand, and I embodied the spirit of a madman. I embraced this identity, and it resonated with people,” he shared.
Addressing the obstacles he encountered, the rapper candidly discussed the stigma attached to individuals sporting dreadlocks during that era.
“Back then, having dreadlocks meant facing social exclusion, but now people understand and appreciate it as a brand,” he added.
Despite facing resistance, Kwaw Kese underscored that his persistence and unique brand identity eventually led to his recognition and garnered respect within the music industry.
