Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has announced his departure from active political engagement to concentrate on his humanitarian work through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation.

Gyan, who was previously affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stated in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) that his involvement with the party had not been fair to Ghana’s youth. He expressed a commitment to stepping away from partisan activities to focus on independent efforts aimed at empowering the youth.

Gyan’s political involvement began gaining prominence in early 2024 when he was appointed chairman of the Youth and Sports Manifesto sub-committee for NPP’s Presidential Candidate and Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. His role included participating in campaign activities, such as a notable walk in Akropong with Dr. Bawumia.

Despite this engagement, Gyan has chosen to prioritize his humanitarian initiatives, emphasizing that his current focus will be solely on charitable work without any political affiliation.

In his statement, Gyan expressed regret for his past political associations, acknowledging that his actions may not have aligned with his intended support for Ghanaian youth. He affirmed his dedication to contributing to the country’s development through his foundation, rather than through political channels. Gyan also extended well-wishes to all political parties ahead of the upcoming December 7 elections, advocating for a peaceful electoral process.

This decision marks a significant shift for the 38-year-old football icon, who has previously balanced his public life between sports and political involvement. Asamoah Gyan’s move underscores his commitment to social causes and highlights the role of public figures in supporting community-focused initiatives outside the realm of politics.
