President Akufo-Addo may soon face impeachment proceedings in parliament, as announced by the Minority MPs. The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, cited their belief that the president’s actions have caused difficulties in the country.

They alleged that President Akufo-Addo’s governance approach contradicts Ghana’s constitution, prompting them to initiate impeachment processes.

“The NDC Minority is committed to upholding the constitution of the Republic of Ghana, and we stand with the Speaker of Parliament in this regard. It’s evident that the president has violated the constitution, and we will take appropriate steps. In the coming days, he will be surprised as we commence impeachment proceedings against him,” stated Dr. Forson.

This move by the NDC MPs is a response to the president’s decision not to assent to the recently-passed anti-gay bill, formally known as the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.

Concerns were raised about a letter from the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, instructing Parliament to halt transmitting the bill to the president due to ongoing legal issues.

In a seeming retaliatory action, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin suspended the approval of certain ministerial and deputy ministerial nominees following a lawsuit against the appointment by South Dayi MP, Rockson Nelson-Dafeamekpor. Bagbin emphasized the need to uphold the rule of law and stated that the House would reconsider the appointments after the Supreme Court rules on an application for interlocutory injunction.
